At Alban City Dental & Surgical Centre, our professional team can help patients find their ideal smile with crown lengthening. With this procedure, we can extend the tooth’s surface, allowing for less gum to be on show when you smile. It is also sometimes necessary before applying a crown or implant.
What is crown lengthening?
Crown lengthening extends the surface of the tooth. This allows for a more even smile, with less gum on show.
Why is crown lengthening needed?
Some patients simply have smaller teeth. This can lead to a smile looking out of proportion and asymmetrical. Some patients are perfectly happy with their unique smile, while others look to change their ‘gummy smile’ through crown lengthening.
How does crown lengthening work?
During crown lengthening, we’ll recontour and shape the gums so that more of the tooth’s surface is on display. We do this using a laser and, in some cases, may shave part of the bone.
How long is the treatment?
Crown lengthening can be achieved in just one appointment.
Is it painful?
We’ll first administer a local anaesthetic so you’re comfortable throughout. If you’re nervous about the treatment, we can also provide sedation treatments. If the sound of our dental instruments makes you uneasy, we are happy to offer you a pair of Bose noise-cancelling headphones and your choice of music during treatment.
What happens afterwards?
You will experience some pain in the area afterwards, which can be treated with over-the-counter medicines such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen. The area can take up to two days to properly heal, and it is recommended that you avoid hot food and drinks, as well as anything particularly spicy or chewy, for 72 hours.
