Functional orthopaedic braces are removable braces worn on the upper and lower jaw simultaneously to help realign and correct them to fit and bite together correctly.
Functional orthopaedic braces are most commonly prescribed to children and young teenagers.
They can be used on children as young as seven and are most effective when used to correct jaw position and bites in the 7 – 10 age range and the 11 – 14 age range.
Addressing protrusion and jaw alignment issues at a young age can help prevent further issues and dental trauma or damage from occurring at a later stage.
They can also improve the structural harmony of the face and the functionality of the teeth and jaw.
Why might functional orthopaedic braces be necessary?
How do functional orthopaedic braces work?
Functional orthopaedic braces are designed to promote or modify the growth of the jaws and can also move and adapt the soft facial tissues and muscles into new positions. They can also be used to change the angle of the teeth and move groups of teeth at the same time.
Can functional orthopaedic braces be removed?
Yes, these braces are removable for brushing your teeth. However, it is recommended that patients keep wearing them as much as possible throughout their treatment, even when eating. The braces should be removed when playing sports and playing wind instruments.
How long does the treatment take?
In most cases, treatment with functional orthopaedic braces takes 9 – 12 months.
