What are implant-retained dentures?
Implant-retained dentures are one of the most stable and secure replacement options available. Designed to work in a similar way to traditional removable dentures, implant-retained dentures are fixed in place via implants rather than temporarily held in place with adhesives. With no danger of slippages, implant-retained dentures offer a much more comfortable and natural-looking alternative. They can even help maintain the structure of the face and bone density of the jaw, helping you to look younger for longer.
How are implant-retained dentures held in place?
Implant-retained dentures are securely held in place by dental implants. They do not require any pastes, strips, powders, or other messy adhesives.
What is the difference between implant-retained dentures and traditional dentures?
Traditional dentures are held in place with an adhesive such as a paste, powder, or glue, and these can be messy, hard to use, and sometimes unreliable. Implant-retained dentures instead use implants with special locators to hold your dentures securely in place.
Can I use my current dentures with my new dental implants?
In some cases, it is possible to attach a patient’s current dentures to the implants. This can help cut down on costs considerably, but it will depend on the quality and age of the dentures and whether the patients is happy to continue wearing them.
How many implants are needed for implant-retained dentures?
The number of implants needed for implant-retained dentures depends on where in the mouth the dentures are being placed and how many teeth/dentures are being replaced. In the upper jaw, a minimum of four implants are usually needed, while on the lower jaw, as few as two implants can make all the difference. Most patients receive somewhere between 2 – 4 implants.
Is dental implant treatment painful?
We’ll give you local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain while being treated. We can also offer sedation during longer treatments. This will leave you feeling relaxed and comfortable throughout.
How long does the treatment take?
This treatment takes 4 – 6 months from start to finish. This includes an initial consultation and an appointment. During the appointment, we’ll determine your suitability for the treatment and start the planning process. You’ll then come to have your implants placed, after which a wait of 3 – 4 months takes place so we can be sure your implants have successfully fused with your jaw.
Will I be left with a gap in my smile while I wait?
You can wear your existing dentures while we wait for your implant and jawbone to fuse successfully so you don’t have to worry about living with any unwanted gaps in your smile.
